Moodle Outage and Changes at 9-11am on Aug. 18, 2020

by Jennifer Spohrer -

As the final step in our Moodle upgrade process, both old and new Moodle sites will be down for scheduled maintenance between 9:00 am to 11:00 am on Aug 18, 2020

During this outage:

  • The URL for this Moodle site will change to
  • It will be connected to Panopto, and Panopto course folders will be created for all fall 2020 academic courses.
  • The URL for the old Moodle site, which contains fall 2017-summer 2020 content will become
  • The old moodlearchive site, which contains course content from fall 2014-spring 2017 will be retired.

Starting at 11am, students, faculty and staff should log into to access fall academic courses. (We will place a redirect on to alert anyone who accidentally logs in after that.)

If you need course materials on, create and download a backup file BEFORE 9AM AUGUST 18. You will lose access to those materials at that point.

Please note that due to security risks connected to outdated software on, we have had to restrict access to  to people who are on physically on campus or logging in through the VPN. You will see a security warning when accessing the site, This is due to the outdated software; it is okay to proceed in order to archive materials, but this is why it is imperative that we take the site down as soon as possible.

Virtually shopping Fall 2020 courses?

by Jennifer Spohrer -

There are two ways to find courses on the new Moodle site:

  • Search for them by click on the search icon (magnifying glass) in the top menu bar and typing keywords or the course subject (e.g., ANTH, BIOL, etc).
  • Browse for them in the Course Categories block: click on Academics > 2020-2021 > Fall and then a course subject (e.g., ANTH, BIOL) to see courses listed under that subject.
Either way, you will be able to see the titles of all courses being taught this semester, but if you click on the titles, you will only be able enter courses that:

  • You are enrolled in OR
  • Have guest access enabled — look forguest accessible iconin the course listing.
  • Have guest access with a pass code enabled — look for guest access with passcodein the course listing; if you need the pass code, contact the instructor.

Click the i in the course listing to see the name(s) of the course instructor(s).

Welcome to!

What is

This is the new production server we have built to host Moodle for fall 2020 courses and beyond. We are using the name temporarily, because summer 2020 courses are still being taught on After summer courses finish in August, we will rename that site and this site will become

(Why "" you ask? Because we used "" for our test install, and poodle seemed appropriate for the next iteration, since it came next alphabetically and was shorthand for production + moodle. You did ask.)

Why did you make Moodle GREEN?!?!

Don't worry -- the green is only temporary! and look so similar, and everyone was getting confused about where they were. For now, the green color scheme signals that you are not on site. When this site becomes the new, we will change it to the familiar blue and make the a different color.

What's New in Moodle 3.8?

Plenty! We tried not to change how the site looks, so that students, faculty, and staff would have not have difficulty finding things. However, Moodle 3.8 does have some great new features. The user tour will introduce you to some of these, but we will be documenting more in the coming weeks. Stay tuned!
